The NOJC participated in a Night Out against Crime event at the Donald Harrison Sr. Museum Performance Pavilion. Produced by the Indian Queen Cherice Harrison and the Guardians Institute, the gathering brought the 9th Ward neighborhood together to stand up against crime and violence in New Orleans. The Institute also took the opportunity to honor their recently deceased member Edwin Harrison Sr. Edwin was brother to Institute Patriach Donald Harrison Sr and also was a Member of The Black Men of Labor and Mardi Gras Indians Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, Tambourine and Fan Super Sunday Parade Organization and Congo Square Nation. The Guardians Institute was created to service our community through education, the preservation of New Orleans' indigenous cultural arts and West African/New World oral traditions. The National Night Out Against Crime in New Orleans is a community- wide event held every October to raise crime prevention awareness, reduce crime and increase the support of local, state and federal law enforcement. Farewell to Pete The late master clarinetist Pete Fountain with Tim Laughlin. We bid farewell to legendary clarinetist Pete Fountain who passed away on August 6th. Pete brought the tradtional jazz style of New Orleans to a national audience for more than six decades.
Fountain combined the Swing Era sensibility of jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman with the down- home, freewheeling style characteristic of traditional New Orleans jazz to become a national star in the 1. The Lawrence Welk Show.” He also became a favorite of Johnny Carson and made dozens of appearances on “The Tonight Show” during Carson’s long tenure at the helm of the late- night talk show. Louis Armstrong, one of the most influential jazz artists of all time, is remembered for songs like he is known for songs like 'Star Dust,' 'La Via En Rose' and 'What a Wonderful World.' He was a fixture at the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and many festival- goers felt their pilgrimage to the Crescent City was incomplete until they heard Fountain play. He also regularly led his Half Fast Walking Club through the city’s streets during Mardi Gras festivities, and was one of its star attractions annually. He is survived by his wife of 6. Blue Family Appreciation is about building relationships between families of blue and about building support among each other during these difficult times. The New Orleans Jazz Celebration, Snug Harbor and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band were just a few of the sponsors of this event that came together to support the NOPD and their families with performances by The Charmaine Neville Band and The Preservation Hall Brass Band. Battiste's influence and impact was widely felt over the course of more than six decades in music, from his years as musical director for Sonny and Cher to his landmark founding of the A. F. O. Records collective, the first record label in New Orleans to be owned by African- Americans. He was instrumental in the careers of Dr. John, Sam Cooke and a host of others. Battiste was also a lifelong teacher. Early on, after earning a degree in music education from Dillard University, he worked as a public school music instructor. Later, he served as director of jazz studies for the University of California at Los Angeles' Coburn School of Music, and returned to New Orleans in the late 1. Ellis Marsalis on the faculty of UNO's newly formed Jazz Studies program. In his later years, Mr. Battiste's developed the Next Generation Band out of the University of New Orleans' music program’s students, becoming a musical incubator for future jazz stars. WEDNESDAYS IN MARCH & APRIL April 2. Trumpeter Christian Scott. Al Belletto Memorial Serivce New Orleans jazz saxophonist,Al Belletto, passed away on December 2. Equally proficient on the clarinet as well as the sax, Belletto toured nationally and internationally and had a recording career with major labels including Capitol Records, dating back to the 1. The New Orleans native began his professional career at 1. Bourbon street clubs, while at the same time working toward his undergraduate degree at Loyola University. Belletto began working with Louis Prima, Sharkey Bonano, Wingy Manone and the Dukes of Dixieland, before forming his own group in 1. He earned his master’s degree at LSU and later traveled to New York, where he made friends with Mel Torm. In 1. 95. 8 Belletto’s sextet was absorbed into Woody Herman’s orchestra for a state department tour of South and Central America. When he returned to New Orleans, Belletto became director of entertainment for the Playboy Club chain as well as gigging around town with Ellis Marsalis and directing for the Al Hirt Big Band. Prominent musicians of the big band included Johnny Vidacovich, Bill Huntington, Michael Pellera, Richard Payne, John Mahoney and Rick Trolsen, who referred to Al as “Coach” reflecting the warmth and admiration they felt towards him. Al Belletto’s presence in the community was apparent as a member of the board of directors of the original New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival where he performed for 3. In 1. 96. 8, Belletto successfully pressed for a policy guaranteeing not only that the city’s prominent black musicians would be presented at the festival but that they also would receive compensation commensurate with the white musicians, a proud achievement during the Civil Rights era. Lucien Barbarin has a command of the trombone and love for performing which establishes him as one of the city's premier musical ambassadors. He tours internationally, from the North Sea to the White House, with both the Preservation Hall Band and with Harry Connick Jr’ Big Band. Jazz at the Sandbar is designed to provide UNO Jazz Studies students an opportunity to get real life experience performing with respected professional musicians in front of a live audience.
